Of course I'll title it a re-awakening, as this blog has been dormant for a long time, but really the last few months have been a full on awakening of my person(age).

Durango is a place like no other, and I think in many ways I needed to come down here. I've had my eyes opened for me for a host of reasons. Hopefully I'll be able to explore them all more, and maybe even share them on here, provided I can keep up with my this whole blogging thing.

It's sometimes hard to admit faults. Well, maybe I should amend that statement. For me, it has always been hard for me to admit faults. I am a people pleaser, to a fault, if I'm honest. I have spent a large chunk of my life fully committed to doing and saying whatever it takes to make people happy. This has served me less than well and is something I'm trying to turn around. Of course, now I've found in doing this that being nice is actually pretty good too. I can say no, or I don't want to, or that's not right, but being this honest and open person makes people like and care about you even more than trying to say the right thing does. Go figure, huh?

Anyway, this is just a start. I will have lots, and lots, and lots, and lots, and lots (get the picture) of things to share that I have discovered thus far. I'm also absolutely certain that I am nowhere near done learning. I am really looking forward to finally figuring things out, but the closer I get, the clearer it is that I am oh so far away.

Until we get to the nitty gritty, adios.

Joey

Resurrection

OK, so maybe we are just one day away from yelling "Merry Birthday Jesus!" and we are still many moon cycles away from Celebrate Death (followed by life and re-death) With Chocolate Day, but what the heck, let's do some resurrectin'!

So many things have been happening, that it feels like I've barely been around at all. Of course some of you followed my being on Sara's late blog (God rest its soul), and others have watched me in various strange helmets and glasses on Facebook. Maybe now it's time to actually tell some of you what's going on. Oh, and by some of you I mean chronicle for my own future purposes because only myself and two dustmites that Master Control Program sucked into the network with his big laser doo-hicky actually know this thing still even exists.

So these days I'm busy working out my last few days at Flatiron (only 4 more to go!). Aside from that, I've been busy gaining about 500 pounds too much. You should really see me now. I look nothing like I used to. I used to have long beautiful blonde wavey locks, now I look like a boot camp drill instructor, complete with the massive guns. Luckily though, I've managed to keep my sarcastic wit. Still riding occationally, and thinking it's about time to mount a serious attack on next season. Let's get physical!

I'm really starting to look forward to 2009. So many changes in store, and I have no idea what any of them will be. I don't know if I've ever had so much uncertainty in my life, but as I've said before, if I don't land on my feet, I can always tuck and roll. Works in the movies, right?

Probably going to spend the next few posts going through the year from Gila to current, mostly for myself. You see, when a person reaches such an advanced age the memory starts to fade a little bit. Who knows what will come of it, no really, does anyone know? I haven't the foggiest.

Fire Sale Continued

Seeing as how I find my mother's offer of two half eaten jars of peanut butter an unacceptable bid for the rights to this blog, I have decided to do a bit of a remodel in the hopes to attract more reasonable purchasers. Of course I hoped for a win, but I was practical about my aspirations. As someone who hasn't won a race in over 7 years, a win is probably on its way so long as I keep progressing, but I'm not quite there yet.

Today I reached my goal, but just barely. I threw caution to the wind for most of the race and tried repeated attacks. I can't say exactly how many I tried, but it had to be somewhere between 5 and 10, my last coming with just three laps to go. I was pulled back rather shortly after I went on this last one, it maybe lasted a lap, but it was worth the effort. I guess the pack was very interested in sprinting, wish I had received that memo. I maybe wouldn't have burnt so many matches had I known.

When you boil it down, you can't be too disappointed with a 5th place in pretty much the largest Cat 2 race in the country. It isn't a shabby result.

Oh, by the way I'm still sitting in 11th overall, there wasn't any change to that standing (obviously with a pack finish).

Tomorrow is the big day, we have 103 miles with 5, that's right, count them, 5 categorized climbs. I haven't yet decided on a tactic, so we'll see what the day brings. After that we begin the long drive home. Look forward to seeing everyone back there, especially a special someone whom I love and miss oh so very much (just two more days, baby!). Depending on the hotel situation we'll see if I can provided a play by play of how the Queen Stage went down.

Night world!

Achilles' Heel

Read this and you will understand immediately what I'm talking about.

So, um yeah. I guess I need to work on this a little bit. In the grand scheme it's not that bad. I guess I didn't finish dead last today, and really I did minimize my losses pretty well. All in all I picked off a couple people and a couple people got me. Net result was down one place. 11th overall going into the fun day of the race isn't too bad. Really, all I can say is that I went as hard as I could and I couldn't have done any more.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll remember to take a few photos of Randy and Baker racing later in the day. By then I'll know what needs to be done to take a bit more out of this race on the queen stage.

TTFN.

Tour of the "Gila" Monster

Of course I know how to pronounce it, but saying gea-lah is so much more fun than hee-la. Things are going far better than planned so far. I'm staying out of trouble for the most part, so that's positive. It always amazes me how crashes happen. I saw two out there today and I just had to wonder how/why. I guess I can't say too much. I've had some pretty crazy and stupid crashes in my day. Over time you learn how to avoid these things. The weirdest part about both high speed get-offs I saw today was that I was sitting in the top 10-15 and they happened in front of me. Pretty rare if you ask me.

Anyway, back to the post about me! I'm really please with myself thus far. I'm feeling really good out there, even climbing with the best today as others fell off the pace. I'm not used to that feeling, looking back and seeing less than 15 in the group. The rush is enormous. Here's the recap thus far...

Stage 1

Nothing was really sticking until a counter to one of my moves got away, a full 50 miles into the race. After that another group got away and I was able to jump across to it. We worked our butts off and finally after what felt like 40 years, but probably more like 40 km we made the junction and were a group of 11. We lost a couple after the feed zone and hit the final climb as a group of 9. I was promptly dropped but kept a steady pace. I was caught and passed by 6 others who were trying to bridge in a later group, but was never caught by the rest of the pack. 15th on the day, not bad for a "sprinter."

Stage 2 (today)

Today the move went without any effort at all, it made me very jealous after all the work I put in yesterday. Steve, my teammate out here was able to get across to the group on the climb, so there were now 9 up the road and I had a reason to follow wheels and be smart, the way I prefer to ride. We took it pretty easy up the first half of climb #1, but started to speed up at the top. On the way down we had one of those pesky crashes right in front of me, but I was able to thread the needle between fallen riders at high speeds and not really lose any momentum. Made it down in one piece and hit the base of the second climb. It was game on for this climb. We held a good pace at the bottom, and about 3 km from the summit we started going faaaaaast. When we hit the top there weren't more than 20 of us in that main field (started with about 50). Next up, crazy descent. Nothing much happened on the scary way down to the valley, two thumbs up there. Once in the valley we continued going fast. There was a heinous crash and that was about it for the valley. We hit the final climb and I couldn't quite match the acceleration of the top guy, but was fine in the pack. In the end we almost caught the lead group. I finished 15th (again), only 24 seconds back of the winner.

End Result

I'm sitting in 10th overall, only 3 minutes out of 4th. We'll see if that's doable. I'm sure there'll be people gunning for me and much will change in the TT tomorrow, but I'm confident. I know I'm one of the stronger guys at this point so now that I have the confidence I think I'll do better.

Back with updates in the near future.

Racing!

Ah, how I have missed you, my dear sweet races. Unfortunately you have taken a back seat lately and I think I made you mad at me. Please don't jump up and bite me like you did on Sunday. I know I may have neglected you in favor of my love Sara, but that doesn't mean I care for you any less. You have to know that I will never truly be gone, I just can't get over how jealous you have become. Forcing me to the ground at high speeds isn't going to make me want to come back sooner. Lucky for you I have a short memory.

So, as the rest of you can probably gather, I've been spending more than a fair amount of time with Sara. I really couldn't be happier about that fact. She has really been amazing for me the last two months. It seems like so much longer. I feel like I've known her for years already, so that's nice. There are so many things that go through my head when I think about her, but it's difficult to put them all into words. All that I can really think of is love. There you have it, Joey is in love.

As you could also surmise, I hit the deck recently in a race. I haven't been this sore after a crash for quite some time, so it's a bit of an eye opener. We were going into the final 300 meters of the race when all h-e-double hockey sticks broke loose and next thing I know I've hit someone and am on the pavement being run over by multiple others. That sort of activity does not come very highly recommended. Fortunately I had Sara to take care of me and help bandage me up afterwards. Thanks my dear, you're a lifesaver.

Currently I'm fighting back all that soreness at Gila. More to come on that, let's just say I'm having good sensations going into my goal stages here, so I am tranquil. Until then...peace and / or out!

Lazy, so lazy...redux.

Well, here I stand before before you all, asking for your forgiveness. As has been said before on more than one occasion, there is much going on in my life these days. Where shall we start?

I suppose we should start with the most important item. Yes, for those of you wondering I am still, as Simple Minds says, Alive and Kicking. So, from that point of view things are going well.

But...

Things are far better than just that. Recently I've been hanging out with a Pretty OK Girl by the name of Sara. She really has helped open me up to the wonder that is me. Fortunately she doesn't yet know how dangerous it is to feed a roadie's ego. I'm sure soon enough she'll see the error of her ways in that respect, I just hope for my sake it's not soon. If'n you'd like a recount of our first encounter, you may just have to talk to me in person. I can only convey so much excitement via plan text (or rich html for that matter).

Next in line would be that racing season has really started to rear it's ugly and fun head. So far I'm about 5 races in. My form definitely isn't where it was when I left off last year, but I'm pretty far along compared to my normal for this time of year. Depending on what makes you laugh more we can say that either (a) I am tranquil, or (b) I have been having good sensations in the legs. We'll see how things go the next couple weeks leading into the first real test of the year. Gila, here I come. Goals include but are not limited to the Inner Loop day. I think that course really suits my attributes well. The climbs are enough to take the sting out of most legs, but not quite steep enough to let the Skinny Bastards (climbers) dance away on the pedals. Just remember to those of you who make it to a race...I've got a fever, and the only prescription...is more cowbell!

As always, work is keeping me verily busy. As usual, there are many exciting things going on, but all require hard work. It's been great having Koach there working with me. I've gotta say, he's a pretty good employee and a hard worker.

Ok, enough about someone else, let's get back to what's important here. That would be me. Finally, I've changed scenery. I'm still in D-town, just a little further south. Currently chilling in the Wash Park/DU/Platte Park/Pearl Street 'hood. Let me tell ya, living only one block from Rubin will make me both fast and well fed. Thanks to you for that sir.

Well, I think that's about enough for now. I'll try to hop on soon and post a few pics of what's going on (sorry mom, I'm on a laptop without the photos).

Oh, one last thing. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MISS MARY!!!!!!!!!! My little sister is growing up. I hope you had fun today!

Lazy, so lazy!

It's not that I have nothing to say, it is just that I am lazy, very lazy. This time I've headed to the root of the problem, where it all started, Reno, NV. I wish I could say this is for a good reason, but I can't. Unfortunately my Great-Grandmother passed last week so that means it is time to get the fambly together again. The Service is taking place today, under what look to be crisp blue skies. I hope that everything today is as beautiful as her life was. She was an amazing woman, the true matriarch (forgive me if I've misspelled that) of the family. I will make sure to share more of my experiences later, as I have no idea what the internet situation is down in Yerington where this is happening.

There is a joyus side to this trip, however. I'm also here a few extra days to help celebrate Mom's (belated) birthday! Happy Barf-day Mom! I couldn't be here without ya!

Oh, and as one last aside, I need to get a Wii, those things are way too fun. I can't believe my mom is more hip, cool and/or with it than I am. She already has one and has been totally kicking my butt. I will demand a rematch once I've had a chance to improve. I love a good debate; arguing the facts, composing a good approach, using logic and reason to make a good point, and defend your statement. Sadly it is becoming a lost art. There is little I hate more than people who argue on emotions or half facts or even worse, information taken so far out of context that if somebody cited the source, their argument would become laughable.

Next time you open your mouth, consider the following checklist:

1. Take a moment to think, compose your idea into a form that makes sense and is worth anybody hearing.
2. Think your point through so you can defend your stance with logical arguments, not diversionary tactics.
3. Cite your sources. It is fine to say, "This may be my asshole talking, but all instances of . . ."

There are a lot of people I tend to ignore, I might have to add a few more to that list.

You've Made the List!

1. Seth Rubin

Thanks . . . asshole. Talk me into a pleasant group ride, trick me with biscuits and eggs, and then lead me on a death march through the snow and cold and then warm and windy, climbing much more than anybody needs to in . . . hello, it's February. Hitting the path down to the group ride at Chatfield wasn't too bad. The group ride itself wasn't too bad. The start of High Grade wasn't too bad except Seth kept blabbering about RPE of 7 while keeping the pace nice and high. By the time we got to the top, it was cold and windy and then it started snowing.

Everybody else we were with turned around and went home at the Schoolhouse. "Let's ride to Evergreen and get a donut at the Tin Star, it'll be great, come on Joey" says Seth. I say, "That's it! The Deer Creek/Wads group ride is calling my name, watch out!

Total Eclipse of the . . .

Moon you jackass. I don't know where to begin. The past few weeks have been like an exciting roller coaster ride. I've been to parties, I've met new people, I've suffered through the ups and downs of Colorado weather changes. I can't believe how much I kept bottled up inside!

I got dragged to the rodeo by a few friends who said I needed the experience. I think Kendall managed to document the adventure, but you can search through his blog on your own time. I went to a few parties, some better than others. The Rubinator had a pizza party at his place that was amusing for a while. There was a nice girl there from the British countryside, she talked funny. There was also a party that had a really mixed crowd, but everybody was wearing red, that was ok, but not as much fun as it could have been.

There has been a lot of Monday evenings spent at Lola, but nothing really exciting to tell. Their tacos are starting to taste like cat food, not that I have ever had reason to eat cat food. I have ridden my bike a fair bit this winter, weather allowing. I'm glad Hutchison is riding on the team now. He's a right funny bastard!

I am excited about resuming the regular blogging. All in all, we are a pretty active bunch. I see things, I do things, I notice things and I will write about them! Sometimes I get pissed off and I will write about that. I can't wait to put "the list" on the interweb for the first time ever . . . you might just be on it!

Well, back to work, I work too much. I missed out on Fish and Chips with Seth, JD, and others, but I knew ManU kicked the piss out of Arsenal already, that match was on Saturday and Arsenal always chokes!

- Your Very Own Biographer

Intervention

Every once in a while, you just have to shout, "Jesus take the wheel" and put your faith in somebody else to drive. It's better than SNOW!

Here it is, finally! My update on the trip to the great Northwest.

Yes, as I said before, it snowed in Seattle! Lewis Black might be on to something, because "that's not right!"

On to the rest of the trip.

Actually, I take that back. First, a little back story. A couple of weeks ago I received an email from The Past. A little more than a week after that a few hours were spent with The Past during an extended layover. What came of this you ask? An invitation to Seattle the following weekend.

Now that the back story is over, let us begin.

So, after much deliberation and some wise words from many of those close to me, I was packed on my way.

Observation: DIA is a very spacious airport. This is not conducive to making it from parking out in BFE to your gate in under 20 minutes.

Luckily, I made it to my gate just as they called boarding for all rows, all passengers. Perfect timing, seeing as how I had the world's greatest seat, 1C. One uneventful flight later I was on the ground in a strange new place. Seattle, WA.

Observation: SEA-TAC is a very compact airport. This is not conducive to delaying due to extreme nervousness.

Of course, She was there waiting for me in the terminal, as beautiful as always (proof to come). We got in the car and took a short, wet ride back to the apartment where I was greeted by a very young and sometimes rambunctious fur-ball. Now the rest of you can meet Izzy.
Oh, she may look sweet here, but she's got big, sharp, pointy fangs!

Look at the bones! (Apologies to all of you who don't get that reference, but I think its pretty funny.)

I spent the next few days learning the city, drinking plenty of coffee, tea and some really good wines. I ate waaaaaay too much food, and all in all just had a great time with a pretty okay person. Ladies and gentleman, a few photos, and that proof that I was right about the beautiful thing.

Saturday night at Brooklyn's (per Mr. Brewer's suggestion). Mmm, fatty likes food!
Everything comes highly recommended! I loved the mussels, or as Ann would say, moules.

Sunday night was spent at Purple.
If you look closely, you can see my uber-red right eye from the lessons learned and shared yesterday. Anywho, about the night. Awesome pastas! Oh, and Sunday nights, this is the place to be. If you spend $25 or more on food, every bottle of wine under $50 is half off. Beware, you can do some serious damage at this place. Oh, and the atmosphere is pretty cool too.

Monday morning, at a gawd awful hour, I was off to the airport for the flight home. Armed with an equally great seat for the return home (1D) and fantastic memories I was (not) ready to come home. It's always hard to leave when you've had such a good time. Fortunately for me, I had a lot of work to hit hard when I got back. It helps keep the mind busy.

There you have it, the official unofficially licensed report of my impromptu visit to Seattle.

Items of Note, Continued.

Class, before we begin today's discussion, I'd like you all to watch a short film. Today's exercise will be based on this film, so pay attention. A pop quiz will be given after our discussion, you may want to take notes!

Alright, now I know that Matrix: Reloaded was a "bummer" of a movie on the whole, but this exchange has many very important points. I was reminded of these points on Monday evening when I was out with JD, Seth and Kendall. Now, we could go on all night with this bit, but there are two main parts I'd like to discuss (parts 4 and 5 of our series on Items of Note).

4. The problem is choice. I know that this is a bit vague, but it is meant to be that way. My interpretation is that the problem not only lies in the fact that I choose or have already chosen, but that my life is affected by the choices of others. In the end, all I can really do is live my life how I see fit, make the choices that I see as right, and live with the choices that others make. "While it remains a burden assiduously avoided, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control." I feel that this quote from the discussion is somewhat misleading. The Architect means that he/it is able to control others, whereas I see it as I can control how I react to the choices of others and the choices I will make in the future (hey, here's and idea, I think I'll talk about not believing in fate in a future post). So, in the end, all we have are the choices we make, based either on ourselves or in reaction to what situations we have be thrust toward. What choices have I decided upon? To be happy. To live life how I want. Most importantly, to not let a minute get by without making a conscious decision to do what is right for me. I can't say if this is the right way to go about things (I'll make sure to let you all know if I got this one wrong, but let's say no news is good news), but it's the path I have chosen. What this leads to is...

5. Hope, it is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength, and your greatest weakness. This, I absolutely think is true. It is through hope that we can find the power to accomplish anything (see "The American Dream"). However, when hope is shall we say, misguided, it can lead a person to do things for the wrong reasons. This can make a person just sit and hope forever without acting (I'm talking to all of you out there lighting the "Casanova Candle" to get a date instead of getting out there and finding one). I guess where I'm going with this one, is that a person should always remain hopeful, keep the porch light on in case someone wants to come over, but not to the extent that that is all you have. Hope, but act as well, being mindful of the choices you are making. Nothing worth doing comes easily, just always keep you mind open. Boy, this one has really gone all over the place. Sorry about that.

Well, that's all I have right now. I know many of you were expecting a quiz, I'm sure most of won't complain about us passing on this little quiz. Maybe another time. More points of note to come in the future. As they grab my attention I'll pass them along to you.

Items of Note

These are a few things I have learned in recent past.

Okay, that may not be completely true. There may be items in this list that I knew before, but have been, shall we say, reinforced as of late.

Let us begin.

1. Do not combine your eyeball and Hydrogen Peroxide. Putting these two together often results in pain. Pain which is even hard for a cyclist who has had two complete knee reconstructions to fathom. Symptoms range from burning to mild redness via the following route: burning, screaming, suffering, crying, searing pain, coming to terms with stupidity, mild irritation and finally to redness. This lesson brings us to our second in the list...

2. Pay attention to what people say or do. When someone says, I don't know, maybe something like, "Oh, you can just use my contact solution." You must either (a) pay attention to where that person is pointing (which was the other contact solution on the top shelf), or (b) notice that they use a strange new contact case. Which brings us to...

3. If you did not follow the lessons learned in 2, one should, at the very least, read the label. Had this happened, I would have known that I should not use this solution without the proper case that helps the cleansing process and after not less than 6 hours should I think of taking this out, because it requires at least that much time to neutralize the Hydrogen Peroxide. Oops, that was my bad.

That's our lesson for tonight kids, stay tuned for more.

P.S. Seattle weather is total crap. I do have a ton to say about the trip (aside from the little tidbit above), but just wanted to get this out of my system. Other than the weather the trip was quacktastic.

Details!

Ok, I know, I'm a slacker, but there's a lot going on right now. So, gauntlet thrown, gauntlet picked up, and now I'm about to bludgeon you all to death with the gauntlet.

Who needs friends...

When I have enemies like these?

Or, wait, I think it goes the other way.

Well, having browsed the blog-o-sphere for what had to be at minimum seven minutes this evening (yes, that's right an entire seven minutes) I confirmed what I figured all along. Many of my friends are evil people. Just take a look at what Seth had to say about our little journey on Saturday. Brian wasn't much better, he was after all an accomplice, but at least he was more muted (on his blog, but not in person) about how much he enjoyed my suffering.

Here's what I think about all of that:
It's funny because it's true.

In other news, and in case you missed it earlier. A super-duper awesome-tastic holiday is coming up in only two days! I know I'm a weight freak, but there is something about a day that is devoted solely to eating as much as you can without suffering from the adverse condition known as death that really speaks to me. Hey, everyone needs a skill. I'm just glad I finally found mine. Let's hope its not my only skill, otherwise I may need to find this store.
Everyone have a great holiday. Ms. Ann made a wonderful pasta dish, we had some "Award Winning Artisan" bread (at least that's what the packaging said), and a great Pinot.

Going back to the I told you so comment. I made the mistake of weighing myself at Dad's and I've gained 10.6 lbs in only two months. Again, time for me to start taking the training a little more seriously. I can't gain the 20 lbs again this year that I had to fight off the last two. This weekend was a good start, but I'll need a lot more internal motivation to make it through this week. I felt about plenty-six million times better today than I did yesterday. I made my way up to Boulder and met Dad, Jerome and Brian for a bit of fun on more hills. Demoralization was the name of the game as Brian and I started going at each other, again. I'm starting to see a pattern emerge here. If I didn't mind it so much I might try to go easy, but it helps keep me in shape and honest.

The only thing that really stuck with me from this ride, other than sore legs, was how friggin annoying some people are. If I take the time out of my hard training ride to raise my hand and waive, or give a super-big nod to a fellow cyclist, then respond in kind! There are not many things that chap my hide more than people watching me make these obvious gestures without so much as an attempt to return the graciousness. Don't stare me down! Some people can be so aggravating. Ok, I'm done with my little rant for now.

I hope everyone else had a wonderful weekend out there and are ready for the food-fest later this week that is Thanksgiving. I went out with Kendall (more info and pics on his blog) and Seth for a day of fun and excitement up in the hills. Being someone who doesn't particularly enjoy hills aside from going down them, I knew that today was going to hurt, and I had only a bit of a warning as to just how bad this would be.

HOLY COW! This ride was way harder than I thought. Needless to say, the legs are a little toasty for right now. I tried the normal two at a time on the stairs to get home and I almost collapsed. Easy does it for the rest of the night. I'm sure there will be more fun and fancy-pants riding tomorrow. Stupid alpha-male syndrome.

What's the moral of today's story kids? Ride more! I'm starting to get out of shape. Just one month ago today would have been a fun, but kinda hard ride. I definitely would not feel this recked if I would ride more than just two or three times a week. Guess it's time to break out the trainer for the evening rides.

Mmm. The Pain!

Trying new things can always be an adventure, and yesterday was quite an adventure. My hat is off to all women who wax regularly. I went in and got my arms done while Seth was getting his legs and it was an experience to be certain. It wasn't so much the pain while it was happening. Now, don't get me wrong, it was painful while it was happening, but it's the lingering tenderness later that day and early the next that can get to you.

Note to self. Next time I plan this, do not go on a 5 hour ride out east with only two bottles. Dehydrated and low on calories makes for a painful session. Apparently, it is difficult to rip hair out when one is shivering in an 80 degree room. As the blog says, c'est la vie.

Oh, and I did ride this weekend. 5 tubes later the rides are done. It was a total flat-fest out there. I had 4 flats on Saturday while Dad and Jerome each were able to squeak buy with only one apiece. It got to the point where I had to buy a tube from some random guy on the Cherry Creek Path and Dad need to call Ms. Ann for a ride home. We vowed to not let that happen again.

Sunday we each came with two tubes, a patch kit and multiple CO2 cartridges. I only had one and dad managed only one on the ride, but as of last night another was going soft, so he may have lucked out.

Today is an off day. Hooray for Bank Holidays! Veteran's Day (observed) rocks.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://joepink.blogspot.com/2007/11/oh-pain.html' title='Oh! Any time I am awake at the un-godly hour of 6:00 in the AM there must be big things a-happening. As a congrats to me I decided to take off a half day yesterday. Just to ensure everything was good to go I went into the office of one of The Powers That Be and ask if there was anything else I could do to help her out. The only response I received was, "You could take the rest of the day off and enjoy yourself, you earned it this week."

Me so happy!

So with my freedom, what did I decide to do? I went to lookout and pretended to be a beautiful person for a photographer. What did I get out of this you ask? I got to look fast!Ego officially properly inflated. You make all feel free to bask in my glow. Adore me!

Of course I'm not so self centered that I refused to share this opportunity with anyone else. So you may now all adore Kendall.
To those of you with photo needs, go check out Fabio Cardoso. He did an awesome job with these, and they are just a couple quick and dirty shots he put together quickly tonight after the shoot. I can't wait to see the actual final product. Oh, and he does waaaaaay more than just cycling and / or general sport photos. Quite a nice portfolio if you ask me. Of course you didn't, but I don't so much care. Ha.

After my ego was fully inflated I made the HUGE mistake of meeting up with Teno, Cyn, and Bekah for a little Mario Kart and Burritos. Nothing like meeting with friends to bring a person back to reality. A few highlights of the night can be found on Teno's and Bekah's blogs. Oh well, at least we got Teno to do his impression of either (a) a gargoyle, or (b) a strange little garden gnome.
I'm sure today will present many, many other opportunities to re-inflate my ego so in the end, I come out ahead. Off I go to reconnoiter the dirt roads up by DIA. It's winter training time!

Good Morning Vietnam!

This morning I had to be up super-duper early for an important conference call with the Flatiron Bosses and the TD Banknorth Bosses (hereafter known as "The Powers That Be"). My hat is off to all of you who regularly get up at 5:30 in the AM. For a long time now I figured it wasn't for me. Today I found that out for certain. I even went to bed early, about 10:30 last night, and it still was difficult to wake up. Thanks go out to Bekah for the friendly reminder to wake up. It's nice to know someone in the big wide world is looking out for me.

All in all the meeting went well, we got what we were looking for so I guess you really can't ask for much more. Oh, and all of The Powers That Be are just ridiculously smart. If I end up half as intelligent as them I should do well in this life.

If one thing can be said for waking up at the butt crack of dawn, it is that the view is spectacular. The world waking up is a very beautiful thing.

Now off I go to work. Should be a busy, busy day getting out everything out to the world that was discussed at the meeting. I guess I prefer it that way. I always enjoy have something to do to make the day go by quickly. Let's hope it's not so quickly that I don't get to enjoy what should be another beautiful Colorado day to go with this beautiful start.

Peace!

Good night blog-o-sphere. So "What?" it is.

Anywho, on to today's post.

So the plans for Saturday night were to go to the Avs game, which I did. I knew going in that these seats were going to be pretty spankin' good, but I had not idea that this is what I would be seeing...

You see, Jerome C. invited Dad and I to join him and Scott S. at the game for a nice little night out. I have been to hockey and thought I had good seats. But sitting on the glass is an entirely different experience. It really makes you reconsider what you know to be fuh-nomenal. PHENOMENAL! If you anyone ever has the opportunity to give it a go, I recommend jumping at the chance.

And now, lot 665 ladies and gentlemen: a papier-mache musical box in the shape of a barrel-organ. Attached, the figure of a monkey in Persian robes, playing the cymbals. This item, found in the vaults of the theatre, still in working order. Showing here.

Extra credit points to anyone who can name from where that quote comes, but really, next we have a wonderful Colorado fall day.

I don't know what it was about this day, I think it might have been Wednesday of last week, but I decided to just sit outside for lunch, lay back next to a little grassy area and relax. I'm starting to think I need to do this more often. Sometimes we just need to stop and smell the roses. Or I guess I could consider the lilies, oh how they grow and grow. I should enjoy the beauty around me more often and I really need to remember that no matter what is going on, everything else keeps on keeping as well.

At Franchise End!

I know it's still about a month away, but Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is coming out on DVD. I need to quit this short attention span theater thing and grow a beard that awesome.

Finally, our dear Rockies got the snot beat out of them for four straight games in the World Series, but the views were spectacular nonetheless.

I thought the fireworks were pretty sweet from my roof. I tried to get a good shot of the flyover, but when the F-15s go right over your head it's hard to get them in the frame very well. This one just kinda came back to me. As more come up I'll try and share them.

Next time anyone out there on the intahrweb thinks of saying "ignorance is bliss," please first go here and learn the true context of the phrase. Things really take on a whole new meaning when one takes the time to attempt to understand and fully comprehend the entire story before making a statement / judgment / rationalization. There are probably times when it is said that the implied meaning from the Ode is used, but I find that to be the case on fewer and fewer occasions as time wears on.

One of the beauties of literature lies in its ambiguity (that is, unless you are reading a legal document, and then the lawyer made some BIG mistakes). While yes, the author, in this case Thomas Gray, wrote this Ode with a certain meaning in mind it is up to each of us to internalize the words before us and really give them strength. Of course therein lies the fatal flaw. As there are 6.blahblah billion people in this world, there will also be 6.blahblah different interpretations of the Ode. But, if you can have with me a meaningful discourse and present your point of view as it differs from my own I will be happy to hear it. Just don't accept at face value what you hear because many times it is total crap that I or anyone else just made up. It is up to us, as a society to involve our brains in our daily life as opposed to letting the boob-tube or webernet do it for us, and yes, I too see the irony in posting that.

So, as Karen would say, I'm off my soapbox now.

Post Script
Should I ever do the opposite of what I have said above, (without first winking, smiling, giving a nudge, saying "know what I mean" et al.) make sure and give me a sharp smack on the head. While I know some things, I definitely do not know all and I always want to learn more.

Insane Stunt Bonus!

Yes, even with shunts like this I would still love to try my hand at auto racing. Photos to come eventually, but so far we have the Spirit of Thanksgiving, far, far, far too much sugar, and a fun futbol game recently. Party on Garth!

Last night I had an amazing time. I'd like to thank everyone on behalf of Dad for making it to D-town for the celebration. I'll get all the photos and put a few select shots up here soon (I hope). There was just so much going on that I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to put into words just how much fun it was. Of course, whenever Ken B. is in town from NYC there are bound to be some stories.

Today is all about relaxing. With the nasty weather out the entire family went out for breakfast at The Original Pancake House and now we're all just lounging around. I'm not quite sure what's on the docket after they head off to the airport, but I'd like to keep this low-key thing going. Maybe go catch a movie, eat a nice dinner or get a couple of drinks. Really doing any one or a combination would make for a good end to a great weekend.

hOoray!

With an extra big O!

Things seem to be going really well right now. Everything is coming up Milhouse!

It's going to be a super-fun weekend. I can't wait to help Dad celebrate his birthday, especially with all the family and friends that will be in town. In fact, Dad and I went out to lunch with little Miss Mary today.

We really didn't go anywhere special (just the Corner Bakery), but it's always nice to be together. I love this fambly!

I'll try to take many (blackmail) photos of the party Saturday night, but if I have too good of a time and forget, don't hold it against me.

After that it was back to the grindstone until I didn't really want to be at the office any more. So...I went home and worked some more! After that it was on to watching the game with Rebekah.

The Rockies totally ROCKED today. Nothing like winning the opening game of the NLCS away from home to demoralize the other team. Demoralization is, after all, my favorite pastime. I'm not sure on the statistics but it should be something like 84.756% of teams that win the opening game of a series go on to win in the end. Everyone be sure to watch the next few games. I think there will be big things ahead for many of the young guys on the team this year. If not, at least good memories will be had by all. And really, in the end all we have are those memories, so make them while you can.

And now for something completely different...

I think I'm ready to finally make the big jump and get myself out of Downtown, but man, with views like this....

It is just really hard not to enjoy Denver. This was dusk a couple of days ago from the top of my building after a (hard) ride with Seth. Man, I don't know how I won't be flying next year if I end up riding with him a lot this winter. The guy just never goes easy. I guess I'm just glad I'm not a Time Trialist, because if that's how you have to train to do well, it just seems like waaaaaay to much work.

More riding, work and fun to come in the next few days. The rundown goes a little something like work, ride, golf, eat, drink, ride, drink, ride, drink, ride, drink, eat, and then ride. I think that's about it. I'm starting to feel more like my old self again so that's pretty nice. The only downside is I see about 10 things a day I want to just rant about here but I'm not quite sure that's the best thing to do. I'm sure if we both had the time I could go on, and on, and on about all that's been happening but for now let's keep it (somewhat) short.

I'm not quite out of my funk yet, but I've been running around like a chicken with my head cut off so much recently that I've been able to push most of those negative thoughts out of the forefront of my mind. Oh sure, they still come back on me from time to time, and some do so more prominently than others, but what I've really noticed is that when you need someone to come through for you they usually do.

Many say a friend in need is a friend indeed. While I believe that to be true, I think the true measure of a friend comes when they are the one that is needed. When you know that someone is there for you time and time again you know that that person is really there because they care about you. So, to all of my friends, thank you for everything you do for me, even when you don't know you are doing it.

Anywho, a rundown of the last few days goes a little something like this...

Wednesday was pretty hectic at work so I wanted to get out and let off a little steam. Gave Seth a ring about doing an easy ride around the park and instead got taken out to the driving range. Nothing says take out your aggression like hitting a small ball as hard as you possibly can.

Thursday I went crazy at work. Again, so much to do, so little time to do it in. Thursday night was a night to remember for sure. I went out to Meridian (aka The Thunderdome or Meridiots) for one final hurrah. Things went about as well as could be expected. I made the break with Byron (again) but we were not lucky enough to have any help. Two people out in the wind are not very fast and we got caught on the last lap with less than 500 meters to go. I still ended up 2nd in the sprint (I refuse to count the guy that passed me whom we had lapped at least once) so I can't be too disappointed. After that I went out with a few other cyclists (hereafter "Ridiculously Skinny People") to enjoy some frosty beverages and take a load off. Judging by the amount consumed we all needed to take a load off.

Friday I got Knocked Up with Christy. Probably one of the best movies I've seen all year. To those of you who haven't seen it, go rent it. Right now!

Saturday was a semi-relaxing day. I went out with Teno for a good ride out in the tornado called south Denver in the morning and spent the rest of the day doing nothing. Pretty much just what the doctor ordered.

And finally we arrive at today. Seth and I went out for 4-5 hours with a few hills thrown in for good measure. As soon as I made it home I was in the shower and then out the door for some fun at the local 'cross race. Man, here's another thing for everyone to do. Go hang out at a cyclocross race with other Ridiculously Skinny People. Definitely one of the most fun times I've had watching racing in a long time. There was beer, food and lots of hollering.

Well, so much for keeping this short. I'll do better next time, I promise. At least that is how it goes in Monty Python land. Yesterday and today I had a some pretty quack-tastic days out and about.

Yesterday started a little late (by normal long-ride-day standards) meeting with Dad around 9h30 and heading out into the fire. The ride included Lookout, Bear Creek, Indian Hills, backside of Deer Creek, High Grade, City View, the backside of Deer Creek (again) then home through Chatfield on the Platte Path. All told it was just inside 100 miles and I felt like a superstar. When I talked today with Dad I found out going up Bear Creek he was averaging 270 watts sitting in my draft, I must have felt good to be pushing that many more watts on the front.

Today I went out to the MOB ride and was very immature. I just can't help myself. Any time someone else raises the pace I have to do something to push things just a little farther. Oh well, I guess we all have faults, and as far as faults go this seems like an OK one for a cyclist to have.

It really is such a shame how things are going right now on the bike. I feel like I have so much fitness that is just being wasted. All I can do at this point is keep training at a pretty high level and maintain as much as I can going into the winter.

Off the bike has been pretty nice too. Last night I met up with Jim, Wood, Randy et al. We hit up Oktoberfest, had a couple brews and pretty much just had a chill time out on a perfect evening. The highlight of the night had to be some of the guys jumping up onto the mechanical bull.

Here we see Randy ready to go.

And then there was Wood, this action shot doesn't do it justice as he was the only one to stay on for the full 8.00.

The thing looked pretty tame to me, but then again, I wasn't the one riding it at the time.

Tonight has been pretty relaxing. Just got home a few hours ago from watching the (terrible) Broncos game with Dad and Ann. We had a few Brats, a good bottle of wine and then some homemade peach cobbler. It may be the greatest side affect of cycling, I get to eat basically whatever, whenever I want when I'm getting in these miles.

My hope is that everyone else on the Webernet had as fantastic a weekend as I. Until we meet again...

TGIF

Man, I don't feel like this week could have gone by any faster.
